DHBs disputing extra charges for rest home frills

Resthomes and district health boards are disagreeing over extra charges for more upmarket rooms for residents.

The Aged Care Association says extra charges range from $5 to about $20 a day for a larger room, ensuite facilities, or access to a garden.

It says the charges are legal and needed if the sector is to fund the extra beds for a growing ageing population.

DHBs say they are worried about inconsistencies and whether residents who agree to pay extra might have to move out of a resthome if they can no longer pay.

Provider Bupa says DHBs must be realistic and discuss it with the industry.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says both sides need to reach an agreement.
