Govt funding still wanted for new road

11:53 am on 4 February 2011

Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio believes Government funding can still be found for a new road into the city despite a report showing the project does not satisfy the required cost-benefit ratio.

Mr Miccio says he supports Nelson MP Nick Smith who says he will continue to push the case with the Government for funding for a southern arterial link road to ease traffic congestion.

While a consultant's report shows the road falls short of the funding threshold, Mr Miccio says it is still the preferred option to deal with peak hour delays.

Some opponents say the road plan should be abandoned after years of debate.

Nelson City Council is expected to make a final decision option next month.
