Coroner calls for safety features on quad bikes

10:16 pm on 11 January 2011

Wellington's Coroner is urging the Government to investigate the mandatory installation of roll bars and lap belts on quad bikes and All Terrain Vehicles.

Ian Smith has released his findings on the 2008 death of Jody Santos, a Wairarapa beekeeper.

The quad bike Jody Santos was riding didn't have a warrant of fitness and he wasn't wearing a safety helmet.

The company that employed him, P.A & S.C. Steens Limited was prosecuted by the Department of Labour for breaching health and safety legislation.

The company was also fined $78,000 and ordered to pay $60,000 reparation to Mr Santos's family.

Coroner Smith has recommended the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Transport investigate the mandatory installation of roll bars and lap belts on quad bikes.

He's also recommended that helmets be compulsory.
