The Department of Conservation says the Heaphy Track will stay open despite more than 1 metre of rain falling on some parts of the track on Tuesday.
The extreme weather led to several land slips and a swing bridge was washed away.
DoC Golden Bay area manager John Mason says staff members have assessed the worst-affected part of the track.
Mr Mason says it is still open despite a huge amount of storm damage, and DoC staff are now working on clearing the debris.
All trampers on the Heaphy Track at the time of the flooding are safe, he says.
