A kite-boarder caught in a gust of wind has died in an accident near Nelson on Friday.
Police say the man was kite-boarding near Wakapuaka, 13 kilometres northeast of the city, when an extreme wind gust lifted him high off the ground about 4pm. He then hit trees and came to rest some distance away in farmland.
Police, ambulance and fire officers found the 35-year-old, from Tahunanui, dead when they arrived.
The man's wife, who was present, is being supported by family and Victim Support.
The death has been reported to the coroner, and police are seeking witnesses.
