Rules eased for foreign students

The Government has announced immigration changes it says will attract more international students to New Zealand.

The new rules make it easier for students to extend their stay in this country and to come to New Zealand as other countries tighten their rules.

From February, students can get an interim visa while they wait for renewal of an existing visa.

Those staying longer than a year will have to renew their medical certificates only every three years instead of every two.

The Union of Students Associations says the changes will make life easier for international students.

Industry body Education New Zealand says it makes this country more inviting as England and Australia are tightening their rules.
