Protesters are trying to stop the demolition of two historic houses at Auckland's St Heliers Bay.
About 20 people stood outside the buildings on Turua Street to stop them from being torn down on Wednesday.
The art deco houses near the beach and village are the first of several buildings due to be knocked down for a shopping centre.
Protesters say the consent process was underhanded and residents were not given a chance to have their say.
A member of the Save Turua Street group, Lynne Scott, says the demolition will wreck the character of the seaside village.
It is understood demolition of the buildings will now begin on Thursday, followed later by a third art deco house and then other buildings lining one side of the street.
A tall wire fence surrounding the site is covered with banners condemning the destruction of the buildings.
Protesters have called for Auckland mayor Len Brown to step in over the issue.
