Whitianga commune confident of survival

The manager of a dilapidated organic farming commune on the Whitianga estuary is confident its 12 dwellings can be brought up to standard.

On Friday, Thames-Coromandel District Council inspectors withdrew a "dangerous and insanitary" notice from a family house at the Wilderland Trust in Coroglen. Two smaller cabins had already been reprieved.

One building beyond repair was voluntarily demolished in October.

The commune's manger, Russel Mooyman, says everyone has been living in tents for a few weeks but four people will move back into the family house this weekend.

He says a schedule of works has been submitted to the council and he is hopeful further notices will be withdrawn in the next couple of months.
