Civil defence agencies in New Zealand and the United States have formally agreed to step up co-operation.
A memorandum was signed on Friday in Washington DC by New Zealand Ambassador Mike Moore and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and the US Federal Emergency Management Agency will regularly exchange information and share lessons from disasters and exercises.
