10 arrested after Far North occupation

3:00 pm on 10 November 2010

A Maori land occupation in the Far North has ended with 10 arrests.

Police moved in on Wednesday morning at the request of Far North District Council to evict a Ngati Kahu group that built a lean-to marae at the Taipa Sailing Club.

Protesters had been occupying the site for a week and say the land has ended up in council and private ownership through unlawful acts by the Crown.

They told the council's chief executive their eviction would not end their struggle to reclaim the land.

Police handed individual trespass notices to everyone who took part in the occupation and arrested 10 who had to be escorted off the site.

The council has posted security guards at the sailing club.
