Hunting at night won't be tolerated - minister

7:29 pm on 27 October 2010

Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson says night hunting with spotlights on public land is illegal and will not be tolerated.

Her comments follow three separate incidents over Labour Weekend, including the death of Rosemary Ives, a 25-year-old teacher was shot by a hunter on Friday night.

Ms Wilkinson says on Saturday night, shots were fired from a vehicle near a Department of Conservation worker camping at Butchers Flat in the Marlborough Sounds.

DoC staff in Wairarapa also received complaints of spotlighting within 50 metres of the Totara Flats hut.

The incidents have been referred to police.

Ms Wilkinson says hunting at night is dangerous and prohibited.
