Police have released the name of a man, who died after the car he was driving crashed off Te Mata Peak, in Havelock North on Saturday.

He was Mervyn Oliver Carr, 72, of Taradale in Napier.

Police say he died after the car left the road near the top of the peak about 9am.

It plunged down a 100 metre bank, flying over walkers on a track below the road before it landed.

A group of workers on periodic detention immediately tried to help the injured man, but he died at the scene.

Police say the road was covered in heavy fog at the time, and that may have contributed to the crash.
