NZ declares puts militant groups on terror list

8:31 am on 13 October 2010

A range of militant groups from the Middle East and Northern Ireland have been declared terrorist organisations by the New Zealand Government.

They include the military wing of Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and the military wing of the militant Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Two Northern Irish groups have been named, including the Real IRA, as has the armed wing of the Philippines Communist Army.

Prime Minister John Key says these groups have carried out terrorist acts.

Mr Key says any assets they hold in New Zealand will be frozen and anyone assisting them commits a criminal offence.
