People have been left shaken after a man forced two drivers from their cars and stole one of the vehicles in Christchurch, police say.

The 28-year-old is facing charges after crashing into two cars at the intersection of Queen Elizabeth II Drive and Main North Road at about 9.30pm on Wednesday.

The man then forced the driver of a third car involved in the smash out of their car and took off in it, later abandoning it on Harewood Road, police said.

Police said the man unsuccessfully tried to take a second car by pulling a person from the driver's seat.

He is accused of trying to steal a further three vehicles, although the drivers were able to drive to safety.

Senior Sergeant Hamish Keer-Keer said police eventually arrested the man on Papanui Road.

"While there were no serious injuries, a number of people have been left shaken by this incident and police are providing them with support," he said.

The 28-year-old man was due to appear at the Christchurch District Court on Thursday on a range of charges, including dangerous driving, robbery, failing to stop and cannabis possession.
