A person has died after being struck by a train while riding an e-scooter in Christchurch's Addington on Friday morning.
Police were called to Lincoln Road at 3.30am and officers said the person died at the scene.
KiwiRail chief operations officer Duncan Roy said the collision between the freight train and the person was at the Lincoln Road level crossing which has lights and barrier arms.
"Sadly, police have confirmed this has resulted in a fatality. This is a distressing situation and our thoughts are with all those involved, their families and loved ones," he said.
He confirmed that the train driver was uninjured, but said he had been relieved, which was standard procedure, and was being supported by KiwiRail.
The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific scenic trains were cancelled on Friday.
