The search for a fisherman who was swept off the rocks at Tapotupotu Bay near Cape Reinga has finished for the day.
Emergency services were called after report of the man being swept away while fishing in a remote location with friends on Sunday afternoon.
Northland Coastguard Air Patrol said it spent the day conducting extensive aerial searches.
It said it will continue to help police with the search if it was required.
Earlier, Detective Sergeant Paul Overton said Auckland Westpac rescue helicopter was dispatched immediately after reports the man had gone missing.
He said police crews, search and rescue, coastguard air patrol, customs, Surf Lifesaving and the Northern Rescue Helicopter were searching the area into the night yesterday.
