A person has died in a crash that has closed part of State Highway 73 near Sheffield in Canterbury's Selwyn district .
The two-vehicle crash happened at the intersection with Deans Road, shortly before 3pm on Wednesday.
St John said another two people have been taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.
The highway between Bulls and Auchenflower Roads was shut for a few hours as the Serious Crash Unit investigated.
It has since reopened.
