Police are seeking public help after a shotgun was fired during an altercation in a block of Wellington flats.

A man was injured when he jumped from a second floor balcony to escape from a person wielding a gun in a Pukehinau Flats in Brooklyn on Sunday.

Officers were called after a shotgun was fired by a person wearing a balaclava.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said there was a dispute resulting in a shot being fired along the hallway as the victim ran away.

Police were extremely concerned over the attack, he said.

"Fortunately, the victim was not injured by the shot however he did sustain injuries as he jumped from the southern end second-floor balcony to escape the offender.

"This reckless action was very upsetting for other innocent building residents, who could have easily been inadvertently injured," Leitch said.

Leitch was appealing to anyone who had information or footage from the area to get in touch.

"There are several pedestrian accessways into the flats from surrounding streets, and a vehicle access from Brooklyn Hill Road the offender may have used.

"Someone will have seen the offender before or after the incident and we urge them to contact us," Leitch said.
