A fire investigator is due at the scene of a major house fire in Wellington on Tuesday morning.
A house on High Street in Island Bay was well ablaze in windy conditions when the first of 10 crews arrived at about 7pm on Monday.
Smoke billowed across the area and could be seen from some distance away.
People were asked to stay well away and avoid nearby roads, and residents told to close doors and windows.
It was contained shortly before 11pm, but two homes and a garage ended up damaged.
A person who was nearby believed the most damaged home was completely gutted.
Fire and Emergency said one crew had remained overnight, rotating in and out to deal with any flare-ups.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
