Auckland's mayor Wayne Brown says the death of a bus driver who died after a fiery crash in Auckland is a tragedy.

Brown said the crash between the electric bus and a car was "a stark reminder of how fragile life is and how it can change in the blink of an eye".

In his social media post, he said Auckland Transport was supporting the investigation and working with police, the bus operator and other agencies.

"Please take extra care on our roads and look after each other, as we head into Labour weekend," the mayor said.

Meanwhile, Tāmaki Drive has now reopened after the crash on Wednesday night in which the bus driver lost his life.

The driver, who worked for bus operator Kinetic, died after the electric bus collided with a car on Tāmaki Drive at around 9pm on Wednesday.

Auckland Transport (AT) said the road fully reopened at 2.30am today.

"The bus has now been removed from the site and all emergency services staff have been stood down," it said.

"All modes of transport are now able to use Tāmaki Drive between Ngapipi Road and The Strand, which was the section of road formerly closed to traffic yesterday."

All bus services in the area have now been returned to their normal schedules.

"AT would like to thank Aucklanders for their support and patience during what was a very challenging incident."

Meanwhile, AT's train network is not operating from today until Tuesday morning due to planned major rail upgrades.

"Rail replacement buses will be ready and waiting to keep Auckland moving and train users are encouraged to check our AT journey planner or mobile app for the latest information before they travel."

The managing director for bus operator Kinetic, Calum Haslop said on Thursday his thoughts were with the driver's family, friends and colleagues.

He said Kinetic was working with authorities who were investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency confirmed the fire started in the car's engine.

Police say enquiries into the crash are continuing.
