Police say the death of a woman in central Whangārei early Monday morning was not suspicious.

Bank Street and the nearby Rose Street bus terminal were cordoned off, and a specialist forensics team brought in, after a body was found about 5.40am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said police had now determined the death of the 56-year-old woman was not suspicious.

He said a post-mortem would be conducted on Thursday and her death would be referred to the Coroner.

Pilmer said he was grateful to people affected by the Bank Street cordons for their patience and understanding.

Tim Robinson, who owns the Bernina Northland Sewing Centre shop metres from the cordon, said the woman's death was tragic, but the fact nothing nefarious was involved would give Whangārei residents peace of mind.
