A fire which broke out in the Waiouru Military Training Area on Monday night happened during regular live-fire training activity, the NZ Defence Force (NZDF) says.
The fire was extinguished by mid-Tuesday afternoon and is estimated to have burned 320 hectares of tussock and grass within the training area.
NZDF said four emergency response crews from both Waiouru and Linton Military Camps responded to the fire, along with Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel and appliances, including five helicopters.
Fifty personnel were involved in the response and there were no injuries.
Army training group commander Colonel Lisa Kelliher, who has command over Waiouru Military Camp and the adjoining training area, said live-firing training was essential in maintaining the army's combat capability.
"This activity can, and does, result in fires," Kelliher said.
"Fire safety plans are essential to minimise the extent of such fires, as is effective alignment between both the NZDF and FENZ. This was shown in the efforts of all parties involved."
Exercises involving low-risk firing recommenced on Tuesday afternoon.
Higher-risk live firing is on hold pending further assessment due to current weather conditions.
