Police union delegates have elected senior sergeant Steve Watt as their new president at the Police Association's 90th annual conference in Wellington.

He replaced Chris Cahill who held the position for nine years and did not seek re-election.

Watt has been Police Association vice-president since 2022.

He had been with police for 25 years and was team leader of Road Policing for Otago Lakes Central.

Watt said he was passionate about protecting association members and achieving the best outcomes for them.

"I will always put the interests of members first."
