Multiple people are seriously injured following a five-vehicle crash in Canterbury.
State Highway 1 south of Ashburton is closed between Windermere and Swamp Road following the incident, which was reported to emergency services around 3:20pm.
Four Fire and Emergency crews are in attendance and rescued one person who had been trapped.
St John confirmed two helicopters are on scene, along with two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle. A third helicpter was en route.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and, if in the area, follow the directions of emergency services.
