A rescue is underway in northern Auckland for two people trapped on a cliff.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) said the pair are stuck at Tindalls Beach in Whangaparaoa.

Police said the pair went down the cliff to retrieve an item they had dropped, but they were unable to get back up.
