Timaru Boys' High School has shut for the day after receiving an anonymous email threat.
In a Facebook post early on Friday morning, rector Dave Thorp said the threat arrived on Thursday night, warning of potential harm the following day.
The school asked parents to keep students home and to collect those living at its hostel, with extra staff there overnight.
Thorp said the school decided to take "the most cautious path available", describing the closure as a "precautionary measure in response to a low-level threat".
He said Timaru Boys' would continue to provide updates.
In a statement, police confirmed they had received reports "outlining emails of concern directed at the school" and were making enquiries.
Police said the emails were sent directly to individual student email accounts.
Timaru Boys' High School is one of South Canterbury's biggest schools. In 2024 the school had a roll of 738 students in Years 9 -13 and could house up to 140 boarders.
