The country's largest gym chain is being taken to court over its membership prices.
City Fitness faces 16 charges under the Fair Trading Act .
The Commerce Commission claims City Fitness' advertised membership prices were misleading.
It said the gym chain did not include a compulsory transaction fee, which the commission said should have been included in the advertised price.
Consumer NZ spokesperson Sahar Lone told Checkpoint people should not need a calculator to work out how much a gym membership is costing.
"In this case, it sounds like what people were seeing the price advertised as was not quite what they were being charged."
Lone said that Consumer NZ had received similar complaints about the sale of carparking, movie tickets and ticket retailers.
"That's why we would like to see fees being advertised in that upfront cost."
She said that when a business added a fee to a purchase it should be well explained what that extra cost was for.
