Police evidence markers can be seen along a busy stretch of road in Hastings in Hawke's Bay which has been cordoned off after what the police are describing as a "serious incident" overnight.
A section of Omahu Road has been closed since the incident at about 2am.
One person is critically injured and two others have serious injuries.
The area remained roped off.
The police were tight-lipped about how the people were hurt.
But yellow evidence markers can be seen dotted along a section of the cordoned off road, along with vehicle which several witnesses told RNZ appeared to have crashed.
Residents told RNZ they heard there may have been a stabbing.
The road was expected to remain closed until later Friday, police advising motorists to take alternative routes.
New Zealand Transport Agency was also advising people to avoid the area or delay their journey.
"Due to a police incident, eastbound access to Omahu Rd from SH2 is closed," it said.
"SH2 remains open in both directions."
Public transport operator GoBay Hawke's Bay advised its Route 10 and 20 buses were being detoured due to the closure.
Missed stops include Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.
