Police have arrested three people after finding a car full of shoplifted meat from supermarkets in Wellington.

On Sunday police were notified of large quantities of meat being stolen from shops in Island Bay and Crofton Downs.

A vehicle of interest was stopped in Lower Hutt without issue, where officers said they found thousands of dollars' worth of animal products.

Two young people and an 18-year-old Lower Hutt man were arrested and charged with shoplifting offences.

Wellington area prevention manager Inspector Jason McCarthy said the items were targeted and were "destined to be on-sold".

"We won't tolerate this type of offending and are working hard to hold those committing retail crime to account."

All three people charged appeared in Wellington Youth Court on Tuesday.
