The body of a man has been found on a popular New plymouth beach.
Police want to hear from people who could help identify the man found dead on Fitzroy Beach on Monday morning.
The man, thought to be in his 50s, was discovered on the shoreline at 6.50am.
Police said the man was of a thin build, with a white beard, and was wearing a high vis shirt and black sweatpants.
They said there would be an increased police presence in the area as inquiries continued.
An RNZ reporter at the scene said by 9.30am police were gone from the scene.
They said the body was found on the beach between the Fitzroy Surf Life Saving Club and the Groyne at the Waiwhakaiho River mouth.
One resident who had been out walking on Monday morning said he saw a police four wheel drive vehicle on the beach.
