Teen charged after car crashed into Kumeū house

A teenager has been charged after a car crashed into a house in the north-west Auckland suburb of Kumeū in June.

A passenger in the car, Elliot New, 16, was critically injured and died in hospital on 1 July.

One other teenager was criticallly injured in the crash, and another two received serious injuries.

Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan says the alleged driver of the car has been charged with a range of offences.

The 18-year-old has been charged with:

  • One count of driver in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence of drugs where death has resulted
  • Two counts of driver in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence of drugs where injury has resulted
  • One count of dangerous driving causing death
  • Two counts of dangerous driving causing injury
  • One count of failing to stop for flashing red and blue lights

He is due to appear in the North Shore District Court on 20 August.

"A critical incident investigation also remains ongoing, as well as enquiries by the IPCA," Hassan said.

"We are continuing to support our people through the process, as well as to the families that have been impacted by the tragic events that Friday night."

In the days following the crash, Hassan said attending officers were confronted with a "very traumatic scene".
