Auckland's Aotea Square cordons lifted after unattended bag found not to be dangerous

Police have stood down cordons at Aotea Square, after a bag was found unattended earlier this morning.

Police at the scene said a large unattended suitcase, almost at waist height, was found at at the bottom entrance of the Aotea Centre.

It's understood staff found the suitcase about 8:20am.

Fifty staff inside the Aotea Centre evacuated while nearby crew working on the City Rail Link also stopped working.

The bag was found to be empty by the Police Specialist Search Group after examination and there's no further cause for concern, police said.

Police said people are free to go about their business at the central Auckland square.
