Investigators called in after person dies in Taranaki house fire

A person is dead after an early morning house fire in Taranaki.

Police have deployed a scene guard at the Derby Street property in Eltham, 50km south of New Plymouth, just before 5am on Friday.

When officers arrived the house was "fully ablaze", a police spokesperson said.

One person was found dead at the home.

"A scene guard is in place and inquiries to determine the cause of the fire are underway."

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews were called to a house fire in Eltham in Taranaki just before 4.45am.

"Crews attended from Hawera, Eltham, Stratford and New Plymouth.

"The house is severely damaged and fire investigators are on their way," a spokesperson said.
