Hawke's Bay Hospital is no longer in lockdown after earlier reports of a person acting suspiciously.
Police were called to the hospital in Hastings at 1.20pm after a report that a person may have a firearm.
The hospital and nearby schools were put into lockdown as a precaution, police said, while officers searched the hospital and grounds for the person.
The lockdown was lifted when police learned the person had left the hospital before officers arrived.
Police said the report of the person having a firearm was unsubstantiated, but further enquiries would be undertaken.
A worker at the nearby Angkor Wat Kiwi Cafe said their business was also under lockdown, under direction from police.
All customers that were in the building at 1.20pm were still inside, they said.
