Eleven fire trucks responded to a large fire at a block of two-storey units in South Auckland on Sunday.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) crews were called to the blaze on Hain Avenue in Māngere East at 12.29pm.

A FENZ spokesperson said approximately half of the units in the block were on fire.

A FENZ spokesperson said approximately half of the units in the block were on fire.

The units were under construction so there was no indication of anybody being inside, they said.

Jerome Tauevihi, who lives next door to the new block of units, told an RNZ reporter at the scene his family arrived home this morning to the smell of smoke.

"We got inside the house, and then that's when we smelled the flames [...] so I told my family to evacuate, come up to the road, straight away."

He said it looked like about four of the nine new units had been affected, and that the fire had spread quickly.

Firefighters have been working to dampen down hotspots and the fire had since been extinguished.

Church fire in Christchurch

Fire crews are also cleaning up after a sudden blaze at a small church in Christchurch.

They were called to the New Brighton building after a fire alarm went off at 2.30pm.

The blaze was extinguished quickly and an RNZ reporter at the scene said the exterior of the church appears undamaged.

Fire investigators are working to identify the cause of the fire.
