Nearly 40 community schemes aimed at improving the environment are to receive funding from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

The biggest winner, receiving nearly $28,000, is a Ngati Te Wai Hapu project to restore the banks of the Tuapiro River at the northern entrance to Tauranga Harbour.

Two wetland restoration projects also feature prominently among the grants.

Matekuare Te Kura Toitu Te Whiti-Nui-A-Toi gets more than $26,000 towards restoring the Poukura Springs lagoon in the Whirinaki Forest Park, and the Tūhoe Puaiao Trust gets $20,000 to fence and plant a wetland in the Taiarahaia range at Ruatoki.
