A stolen car collided with a Wellesley College school bus in Lower Hutt on Wednesday morning after evading road spikes set up by police.
Police said they received reports of a stolen vehicle being driven erratically in the Eastbourne area, heading towards Lower Hutt, at about 8.30am.
"Police deployed and set up spikes in an attempt to stop the vehicle."
A spokesperson said the driver then swerved towards officers standing on the street, avoiding the spikes, before colliding with a school bus which continued on.
"Police have since recovered the stolen vehicle in Lower Hutt, which will undergo a forensic examination, however the offenders have fled on foot."
Wellesley College principal Michael Bain said his understanding was that the bus had been stationary when it was hit.
"A stolen vehicle whilst avoiding spikes caused a glancing contact with the front of the bus. This was very minor and the route was able to be completed without concerns," he said.
"All boys are safe and whilst a little excited, required nothing extra."
He said the school's board chair had been informed and police had come to the school to both report and see if follow-up was required.
