Dr Sharad Paul has spent most of his life trying to understand how our evolutionary past, expressed through our genes, affects our performance, appearance, and what we can do to navigate genetics and our well-being.
Put simply - how can we biohack that system.
In this Here Now podcast Dr Sharad talks about his latest book Biohacking your Genes - 25 Laws for a Smarter, Healthier, and Longer Life. The latest in a long list of books he's authored will soon be out in New Zealand.
While skin cancer surgery earned him international fame from Auckland over the past three decades, Dr Sharad Paul walks in many other spheres, with writing and social enterprise taking up an equal proportion of his time.
From his non-fiction books on science and medicine, to novels and poetry, Dr Sharad seems to have mastered the art of going between genres and subjects as a writer and he puts it down to being an eternal learner and constantly curious. "Storytelling really helps in medical diagnosis" he says, when it comes to setting up a character, laying out a context, identifying the issue and resolving it eventually.
In this pursuit of optimal or peak human performance, where do supplements come in? And, in context to skin here, given we're consumers in a market flooded with oral skin supplements, is that a hack that he gives any time to in his latest book?
Dr Sharad Paul says he's not a particularly big on the supplements but would rather advise figuring out habits and food changes that suit your individual genetics to optimise health span.
