Kāinga Ora has confirmed it will cut 620 roles, of which 194 are vacant, as part of its restructuring.

The roles are predominately from its back-office and corporate functions, with frontline tenancy management roles not impacted.

Kāinga Ora had initially proposed cutting 673 roles, but said it made some changes to the proposal after consulting with staff.

It said the changes would enable the organisation to focus on providing and managing state-owned social housing more cost effectively.

"We need an organisational model and workforce that reflects our new, narrower focus on managing and providing social housing. We also need to align our back-to-basics focus, and reduced volume of activity, while enabling more cost-effective provision of housing and support services to our tenants," Kāinga Ora chief executive Matt Crockett said.

The agency was also entering into a second round of consultation with parts of its finance group and a central North Island community engagement and partnerships team.

Another round of consultation for the two business areas concludes on 28 May.

Kāinga Ora will transition to the new structure on 1 July.
