Nearly 30,000 properties on the Kāpiti Coast north of Wellington were without power for a short time Tuesday afternoon.

The lines company Electra said the grid operator, Transpower, suffered an outage which cut supply to the Electra network for about 15 minutes.

"An area between Paekākāriki and Ōtaki was affected - around 29,600 customer connections," it said.

"Our team were able to restore local supplies quickly once the Transpower supply was restored."

Transpower said it was likely the outage was caused by birds.

"We have concluded our line patrol and removed a significant number of birds' nests from the area, which look to be the likely cause of this afternoon's outage. Apologies again to the people of Kāpiti - we know there's no good time to be without power."
