Tauranga city council says fixing the broken wastewater pipe, which caused a sinkhole in Papamoa last week, is proving complex.

Council's manager of drainage services Radleigh Cairns said this was because of the closeness of the nearby pump station, residents houses and the depth of the pipe.

"Over the weekend we have been stabilising the tomo, and installing dewatering and sheet piling.

"We have also been managing wastewater flows that utilise the nearby pump station to minimise any impacts to the community," he said.

A local told RNZ the hole now looked massive, with constant water pump noise but no wastewater smell.

"This week our staff and contractors will be isolating and excavating the five metre deep damaged pipeline, and assessing potential repair and renewal options to ensure continuity of service," Cairns said.
