Greymouth residents have been told to boil their water because it could be contaminated.
The Grey District Council issued a boil water notice this morning for all customers connected to the greater Greymouth water supply, until further notice.
In a Facebook post, the council said possible contamination was identified during routine water sampling.
"Please boil all drinking water before use until further notice.
"This includes water for drinking, cooking, preparing food or baby formula, and brushing teeth."
The notice affects more than a dozen areas and can not be lifted until there are three straight days of clear test results.
Areas include Greymouth, Cobden, Blaketown, Boddytown, Karoro, South Beach, Paroa, Kaiata, Dobson, Taylorville, Stillwater, Runanga, Dunollie, Coal Creek and Rapahoe.
"We understand this is a challenging time for local food businesses, and we're here to help.
"While you do not need to close, you must follow the guidance in your food control plan... under the sections on 'Managing Water Supply' and 'When Something Goes Wrong'."
The council said hospitality businesses should not make ice with unboiled tap water, or use soft drink dispensers that are connected to the water supply.
"Use boiled water for all handwashing in food prep areas.
"Staff with symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea must not handle food and should seek medical advice."
RNZ has contacted the council for further information about the notice.
