Coroner to reconvene Naitoko inquest

A coroner is to reconvene an inquest into the death of a teenager mistakenly killed by police on an Auckland motorway.

Halatau Naitoko, 17, was shot dead by officers during an arms incident on the north-western motorway in Auckland in January last year.

Officers were trying to apprehend Stephen McDonald when Mr Naitoko was hit.

Coroner Gordon Matenga reserved his findings at the end of an inquest in March. His office now says he will hear further information from 20 December in Auckland.

Although reconvening an inquest is an unusual move, a spokesperson for Halatau Naitoko's family says they are pleased the coroner is completing a thorough investigation.

Peter Sykes says he believes the coroner will focus on the police response and resourcing and whether they could have handled the situation differently.

Mr Sykes says the family is likely to attend the hearings.
