A pilot has escaped serious injury after the light aircraft he was flying crashed while trying to land at Whangarei airport.
A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson says the Cessna's engine apparently failed.
The aircraft landed on a road outside Whangarei airport at 10.51am on Friday.
The fire service says the pilot, the only person in the aircraft, walked away from the crash with only a gash to his head.
