Mayors call for sacking of regional council chief executive

4:07 pm on 7 April 2010

Some mayors who called for the Canterbury Regional Council to be disbanded now want the organisation's chief executive sacked also.

Elected councillors were dismissed last week and some mayors now say Bryan Jenkins should go as well to ensure a clean slate.

The concerns of 10 mayors in Canterbury were part of the reason the Government instigated a review of the council.

The Government is now putting together a panel of commissioners to replace the elected councillors.

Timaru Mayor Janie Annear told the review panel she would like a change in the chief executive.

Waimakiriri Mayor Ron Keating says many of the systemic problems relate to Dr Jenkins.

Dr Jenkins has told Radio New Zealand he has no reason to think his job is at risk.
