Dunedin primary schools close as rolls fall

3:12 pm on 9 March 2010

Primary school rolls are declining in Dunedin, causing three schools to apply for voluntary closure in as many months.

Tomahawk and Waldronville Schools will close on 1 April, while the Ministry of Education is still considering the application by Corstophine School to close.

The ministry's Otago and Southland Manager, Kathryn Palmer, says as Dunedin's population ages there has been a corresponding 15% decrease in primary school rolls there in the past decade.

Ms Palmer says of the 76 primary schools in Dunedin, seven have fewer than 26 pupils.
