Police in Auckland say they will not get a full picture of how two men fell from Lion Rock at Piha until they recover and can recall what happened.
The pair, aged 18 and 31, remain in a critical condition at Auckland hospital after being airlifted there in the early on Wednesday morning.
They fell 60 metres down two cliff faces onto rocks.
Police say they are waiting for them to improve enough for them to be interviewed.
