Waiwhetu stream clean-up to cost extra $2m

The clean-up of a polluted stream in the Hutt Valley will cost ratepayers almost an extra $2 million to complete.

Contractors have been removing sludge contaminated with industrial waste from Waiwhetu Stream in order to build flood protection works since the middle of last year.

Wellington Regional Council says the project cost has increased by $6.3 million, of which $1,995,000 will be borne by ratepayers in Hutt City and the region.

It says the cost increased because the proportion of contaminated sediment, is much greater than originally estimated.
