Big turnout expected at protest in Flaxmere

The organiser of an anti-crime protest by Flaxmere residents last year is expecting a big turnout at a protest on Monday against a proposed work centre in the town.

Hastings District Council member Henare O'Keefe says residents don't want the Corrections Department facility in the middle of their shopping centre.

He told Waatea News the residents feel their community is being used as a dumping ground.

He said the Corrections Department has a community work centre only 4km away in Hastings.

Four thousand people were on the march in June last year.
