Bridge near Levin closed amid flooding fears

7:28 pm on 29 December 2009

A bridge on a side road at Manakau south of Levin has been closed, due to safety concerns after heavy rain.

The Horowhenua District Council says high water flows have scoured the abutment of the North Manakau Road bridge, raising fears the approach could be washed away.

Acting chief executive Tony Thomas says about 15 homes in North Manakau are affected and residents are being advised of the situation.

He says four wheel drive vehicles can access North Manakau through Martin's Farm, south of Tatum Park, between

8-9am and 4-6pm.

People can also walk across the bridge.

Security guards are at the scene, and the bridge will remain closed until further notice.
